Think You Know Your iPhone Camera? Think Again
You’re hiking through a foggy forest trail in Iceland. A puffin lands just ahead, mist curling around its feathers. You reach for your iPhone, heart racing. One shot. But wait—was it framed right? Was the exposure perfect? Could it have been… better?
Most iPhone users know the basics: tap to focus, swipe to filter, maybe even Portrait mode. But what if I told you your iPhone camera is more powerful than you think? These are the hidden tools that professional photographers use — the ones they rarely mention, but always rely on when it counts.
1. Shoot in Apple ProRAW — Like a Photo Ninja
- iPhone 12 Pro and newer models let you shoot in Apple ProRAW format.
- Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Toggle on Apple ProRAW
- In the Camera app, tap RAW at the top before shooting
- Pro Tip: Use in good light. RAW gives you editing flexibility but can get noisy in dim conditions.
2. Tame the Light — Lock Focus & Exposure Like a Pro
- Tap and hold on your subject to activate AE/AF Lock
- Swipe up or down to adjust brightness manually
- Perfect for street scenes, sunsets, or portraits where the light keeps shifting
3. Capture Magical Long Exposures — No Tripod, No Problem
- Turn on Live Photo in the Camera app
- Snap your shot → Open it → Swipe up → Select “Long Exposure”
- Now waterfalls flow like silk and car lights streak like meteors
Live Photos are recorded at around 15 frames per second (fps), so a 3-second Live Photo would contain approximately 45 frames. MacRumors Forums
It’s important to note that while the still image is captured at full resolution (e.g., 12 megapixels), the accompanying video frames in the Live Photo are of lower resolution and quality. This design balances the desire to capture motion with the need to conserve storage space. Consequently, while you can select a different key frame from the Live Photo, the still image will generally offer the highest quality.Â
Keep in mind: When Live Photo is enabled, your iPhone captures about 1.5 seconds of motion before and after you tap the shutter, resulting in a short video alongside your still image. This can use significantly more storage — roughly 2–3 times more than a standard photo — but it doesn’t take 15 individual high-resolution images or use 15x the memory.
4. Unlock Burst Mode — Capture the Perfect Split Second
- Press and drag the shutter button left to activate Burst Mode
- Tap “Select…” after shooting to pick the sharpest frame
- Great for jumping shots, wildlife, or toddlers in motion
5. Use Volume Buttons or Wired EarPods as a Remote Shutter
- Use the volume up button for steadier shots
- Wired EarPods act as a remote trigger — perfect for tripod selfies
- Why it matters: Stability equals sharper images, especially in low light
6. Change Aspect Ratios — Compose Like a Filmmaker
- Tap the arrow ↑ in the Camera → Choose 4:3, 1:1, or 16:9
- Use 16:9 for wide, cinematic vibes or YouTube thumbnails
- Composition starts at the frame — not in the editing app
7. Blur the Background — Without Portrait Mode
- Physically move closer to your subject and keep the background far away
- This creates natural bokeh (aka depth) — no filters required
- Use it for food, people, or close-up textures
8. Turn on Gridlines — Frame It Like a Storyteller
- Go to Settings → Camera → Grid and toggle it ON
- Use the horizontal line for straight horizons
- Apply the Rule of Thirds to tell more compelling visual stories
9. Use the Hidden Level Tool — Flat Lays, Perfected
- Shooting from above? Align the two white + icons
- This ensures your shot is 100% level — crucial for food, flat lays, and documents
10. Don’t Use Digital Zoom — Use Your Feet (or Crop RAW)
- Zooming between lenses = quality loss
- Shoot in RAW and crop later with apps like Snapseed or Lightroom
- Better tactic: Take two steps closer. Your image will thank you.
